I was asked recently by a friend what the difference is between Social Media Engagement vs. Lead Generation. I thought this was probably an answer you all need to hear too!
SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT:
Aimless and strategic likes, comments, story views/reactions, and passive DM’s!
SOCIAL MEDIA LEAD GENERATION:
Actively seeking out ideal clients with a STRATEGY, having a plan in the DM’s to lead conversations to a sale or sales call, tracking your leads on a spreadsheet or another program, FOLLOWING UP, and actively engaging with strong leads or future strong leads!
There’s a little bit of overlap between the two a lot of the time but if you’re hiring a Social Media Manager or a Virtual Assistant to do one or both, you need to be very clear of what your expectations are.
If you are doing Enagagement, it will help to set a schedule like this —
- 5 – 10-minutes like the people you follow post’s
- 10 – 15-minutes watch the people you follow stories
- 15 – 30-minutes comment on posts with hashtags that your ideal client uses
- 5-min reply to comments
- 5-min greet new followers
If you are doing Lead Generation, it will help to set a schedule like this —
- 15-min reply to DM’s
- 1-hour DM script (new leads)
- 15-min engage on stories
- 15-min reply to comments
- 15-min greet new followers
You might come across a few leads when just engaging on your account but if leads are your main goal, you’ll need a plan out into action!
SO WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?!
If you are a business owner, wanting Lead Generation done for you. You need to set up a strategy that can help you complete your goal of booking a sales call or selling a product. Asking a SMM or VA to engage with other accounts to help you sell is not a strategy!
If you are a Social Media Manager or Virtual Assistant and you are being asked to bring in leads for your client. It’s time to raise your prices and learn how to do this work effectively!
I see so many services providers dig their own hole by saying they can do Lead Generation but in reality, they only know how to do Social Media Engagement. This leads to unhappy clients who aren’t seeing their ROI from investing in hiring help.
